Zaw Win Pe was born in 1960 in Lè Gaing and studied at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon, graduating in 1964. He also studied under the master artists - U Kyaw Hlaing, U Ba Yin Galay, U Mya Aye and U Win Pe Myint.
His early works were mostly idealised concepts of peace done in muted tones. However, after further studies and the development of his own techniques and 'artistic eye', his work underwent a complete metamorphosis and his work now shows vibrant colours and strong compositions.
Zaw Win Pe has presented his works at more than 20 exhibitions in Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong, including three solo shows, two in Myanmar and one more recently in the Suvannabhumi Art Gallery in Chiang Mai. Last year, his entry won the First Place in the Myanmar Contemporary Art Awards 2004.
All of his paintings on display in La Luna Gallery show the beauty of his favourite medium - oil applied by palette knife on canvas. He says that for him, using the palette knife is the easiest way to express his emotions and to search for and present the true colours he sees in nature.
