Tran Van Quang was born in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam in 1973 and is a graduate of Hue University, Faculty of Arts with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, specializing in sculpture and painting. For the last eight years he has been working full time as an artist, exhibiting his art in a tiny studio on one of the main streets of Hoi An, with a growing reputation among visitors and buyers from art galleries in Europe, the United States and Australia.
Tran’s paintings are largely inspired by rural life and pastoral scenes, and often reminiscent of past times and age-old customs. He also recognizes that his style has been influenced by some of his teachers and by one of his artistic heroes, the master Picasso. His works are bold and colourful, done in acrylic on card and sometimes also using offering paper as an added texture and background. Some paintings depict single characters or groups of people at a festival, or employed in traditional pastimes, while other more complex pieces tell a story composing pictures within pictures. Tran also does beautiful line drawings of Vietnamese scenes and people using Chinese ink on rice paper.
