Thar Gyi was born in 1966 in Yangon, Myanmar. He is self taught in art but very much influenced by his uncle, the sculptor U Win Myint. He also studied the paintings hung on the walls of the art gallery belonging to another uncle where he worked as a member of staff from 1991-1997.
1997 was an important year for him, as it was then that he had the good fortune to open his own gallery (Thar Gyi Art Gallery) and was able to present his own works and those of some of his close friends. It was also the year that he turned his hand and mind to watercolour painting. Eager to try other mediums and styles, in 1999 Thar Gyi started using a palette knife and working in an impressionistic style and these works became well known among the Yangon art community and sought after by foreign buyers. Experimenting again in 2002, Thar Gyi began working in an abstract style and the unique style he developed has gained him a growing reputation.
His art has been featured in several art exhibitions in Myanmar, Thailand and Singapore, and his more recent abstract paintings are in several private international collections.
