Thanh Van was born in Hanoi in 1970 and graduated from the Hanoi
College of Fine Arts in 1994. Captivated by impressionist paintings
since his childhood, he spent most of his student years exploring
the streets of the old quarter in Hanoi where many artists have
found inspiration before him. Even though he now lives in Ho
Chi Minh City, he has said “My soul and who I am belongs
to Hanoi, a place I can never forget. The place is full of love,
compassion, and the romance of the four seasons…….”
Thanh Van paints colourful, rich canvases of impressionistic
scenes from Hanoi's streets and people's daily lives, paying
special attention to the movements of the people. His vibrant
brushstrokes evoke feelings of a dreamlike, romantic era that
is fast becoming extinct. Thanh Van has participated in several
shows in Vietnam and also in France (1997), Germany (1998),
Netherlands (1998), Singapore (1999), and Hong Kong (2001).
