Ha Hai was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1974. In 1997 he graduated
from the Hanoi Fine Art Institute, and he became a member of
the Hanoi Fine Art Association and affiliated with the Young
Artists Club – Fine Art Association. In 1998, he had
a solo exhibition in Hanoi, and has since had many other exhibitions
in Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Korea and Australia.
His experience from humble beginnings has enriched Ha Hai’s
appreciation of the simple things in life and has him ‘tuned
into the great cause of human existence. With maturity,
he has combined an abstract, impressionistic style to create
simpler and emotionally rich works in terms of inner thought.
Ha Hai’s wishes and desires are best described through
his work “the golden shower” an installation
art piece: bowls are placed on a carpet of dry leaves, candle
light shimmers dimly through paper lanterns and bundles of
threads stream down profusely like torrential rains in yellow
light. This dreamlike space does not much differ from the
subdued colour schemes in abstract paintings since they both
give the impression of nocturnal, misty or dreamlike light.
The emotions emanating from his pictures are difficult to
convey in terms of speech. This inner light which comes from
his installation art seems to have an enlightening effect
on one’s mind as it facilitates “a return to
one’s own roots” especially when living in a
developing or less industrialized country. (Text courtesy
