Louise Truslow is originally from England but has been based
in Bangkok for the past 13 years. She travels extensively throughout
the region, drawing inspiration from the sights and individuals
she encounters. She has exhibited annually in Bangkok since
1997. Her exhibitions have attracted great public interest and
critical acclaim and her work is held in private and corporate
collections in more than a dozen countries.
Louise’s style is loose in its application of paint,
whilst being strong in compositional line. She works mainly
in watercolour, but also in oils - painting on location and
in her Bangkok studio. She chooses a viewpoint for her scenes
that draws the observer into the picture and gives life and
atmosphere to the moment by the use of bold and dramatic colour.
Louise explores both rural and urban landscapes in her work.
Her characteristic panoramic scenes depict a variety of locations
- including the far north of Thailand and the Laotian banks
of the Mekong. Her vivid street and market scenes capture
many different environments - from the bustle of Bangkok,
through to the lanes of up-country Thailand.
One of Louise’s favourite themes is Buddhist monks,
concentrating on the vibrant colours and flow of their robes.
For her May 2003 exhibition, staged at the Sukhothai Hotel,
Bangkok, she developed this theme to produce an entire collection
of pictures showing monks in a variety of situations, involving
many of their traditional activities - including alms gathering,
caring for their temple and contemplation.
The collection of Louise’s work which is featured in
La Luna also has a single theme – this time umbrellas.
She has concentrated on the large colourful umbrellas to be
seen in Thai markets and has studied the shape, colour and
play of light resulting from several being placed close together. |
