Daughter of an acclaimed Vietnamese painter, Dinh Y Nhi took her first painting lessons when only nine years old. Soon after graduating from the Vietnam Fine Arts University she began to make waves in the artscene of the capital city, and she has continued to do so, not only in Vietnam but across the world.
Her portraits of mainly matchstick women, stretched out of proportion, often with haunting but not necessarily scary faces, leave no-one untouched.
With her semi-cartoon and simple style, Dinh Y Nhi manages to express the individuality of her subjects but at the same time creates an image of a common fate, especially in her painting of groups.
Looking at her artwork, one can think of a mix of Munch, Lowry and Bacon, or one can simply and more correctly just think of Dinh Y Nihi, a supreme artist who has found and developed her own unique style in an increasingly commercial artmarket.
